Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.
The family announced his death on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, through a statement shared on social media by his son, Olusoji Jacobs. His wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, was also reported to have shared the announcement.
The family described the late actor as “The Lion of Lufodo” and said they were grateful to God for his life.
Jacobs was born on July 11, 1942, and built a career spanning theatre, television and film. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London before appearing in several British television productions and international films.
He later became one of the most recognisable figures in Nigeria’s film industry, featuring in numerous Nollywood productions and earning a reputation for his commanding performances and distinctive voice.
Throughout his career, Jacobs received several major honours. He was conferred with the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) national honour in 2011 and received the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards in 2013. He also received a lifetime achievement award in 2016.
Jacobs was married to Joke Silva, with whom he also co-founded the Lufodo Group and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts. The couple remained prominent figures in Nigeria’s theatre and film industry for decades.
His death comes after years in which he largely stayed away from public appearances. In previous years, the actor had been the subject of several false death reports, which his family repeatedly dismissed. In June 2024, his son publicly confirmed that Jacobs was alive after another death rumour circulated online.
In the latest announcement, the family appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect their privacy as they mourn.
