The Minister of Education, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has outlined details on the conditions for re-opening of schools and has therefore explained that aside all public and tertiary institutions, all non-MoE educational institutions are free to re-open on Monday, June 15th 2020.
He also stated that foreign students who are outside the country and are identified will be allowed to return granted their country will allow them exit.
He gave the details at a press conference held in Accra today (June 2, 2020).
During President Akufo-Addo’s 10th update on covid-19 which saw the ease of some of the restrictions imposed earlier due to the coronavirus outbreak, he announced that all final year students in JHS, SHS and Tertiary Institutions can go back to school starting from June 15th.
Outlining the conditions for re-opening of schools, the Minister of education said that government will ensure the disinfection of all educational institutions (public and private), Provision of WASH facilities for all schools, Provision of washable and reusable Facemasks for all students and staff, Mapping of all schools to health facilities while all classes are split.
He also said that there will be no mass gathering, no sports and sporting events, adding that schools are not available for religious activities and no visitors would be allowed at Boarding schools.
Dr Opoku Prempeh stated that schools will run short hours when it re-opens.
According to him, classes will start from 9a.am and close 1. Pm with no break time outside.
He also stated that the students will only have four subjects in a day.
Meanwhile, he said that all day students in boarding schools will be accepted as borders.
He said for day students, there would be enhanced protocols to ensure the virus does not spread.
The Minister also released dates for re-opening of schools for final year students respectively.
He said that for University final year- June 15th-July 24th, with Examination period being July 27th to August 21st. For SHS 3_ June 22 to July 31st and examination August 3rd to September 4th.
For SHS Gold, students, they will go to school on June 22nd to July 31st and then vacation period.
JHS 3 students will resume on June 29th to September 11th, then start examination on September 14th to September 18th.
