The Ghana Education Service (GES) under the auspices of the Ministry of Education (MoE) have moved in to disinfect the campus of Accra Girls Senior High School (SHS).
This exercise comes weeks after some 55 students of the school tested positive for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
The exercise which was carried out by Zoomlion saw the disinfection of offices, dormitories, classrooms, teacher bungalows, Assembly hall, the entire administration block among others.
It will be recalled that, on the 6th of July,2020, news broke that about six students in the school tested positive of the deadly coronavirus which caused fear and panic among students and parents.
Later within the week, a joint press release from the GES and Ghana Health Service confirmed the number of cases in the school had increased to 55.
Due to this, the Students were demanding to be allowed to go home immediately but school authorities and the MoE moved in to assure parents and students to remain calm for everything while they controlled the situation.
Speaking to journalists after the exercise, the Greater Accra Regional Education Director, Madam Monica Ankrah said, the exercise was to ensure that schools that have recorded cases are disinfected against the virus to make the campus safe for the students and teachers.
She said, so far in the Region, about six schools have recorded cases, but can confirmed that most of the students who tested positive for the virus have recovered and are yet to return to campus to continue their studies.
Madam, Ankrah added that, government together with the ministry have laid down other safety measures to ensure the students, teachers and non teaching staffs are safe on campus.
Commenting on calls by some teacher unions and the National Parent and Teachers Association to close all schools, madam Ankrah said closing down schools now won’t be the appropriate option, but rather assured the teachers and students that their needs will be catered for.
With the instances where some political figures were reported to have entered the campuses of some Senior High Schools to campaign, she reiterated that, political parties are not allowed to campaign on campuses and for that matter, should any incident of that happens and the person is caught, the law will deal with him/her.
On his part, the Head of Fumigation Exercise at Zoomlion Ghana, Rev. Ebenezer Addae explained to the media the kind of chemical used for the exercise is quality enough to clear the place off the virus.
Beyond the exercise, Zoomlion also donated some chemicals to schools.
