We have no intention of disenfranchising any citizen-EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has stated that it is poised to deliver fair and transparent elections and therefore has no intention to disenfranchise any citizen or group of persons in the country.

This comes after several complaints and allegations by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the EC has intentionally deleted names of persons from its strongholds.

Explaining the issue, the EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, said the hitches that occurred during the exhibition of the voters register exercise were not limited to a particular location.

She, therefore, stated that the Commission will correct all the errors in order to reduce the deficits to the barest minimum.

She also made it known that about 7,969,887 prospective voters were able to authenticate their details at the just ended voters exhibition exercise, the EC has stated.

According to her, the number represents 46.9 percent of all the 17,007,726 who registered during the last registration exercise.

At the end of the exercise, she explained that 698, 404 voters verified their details using the EC’s SMS short code.

She said 7,271,498  persons also verified theirs at the 33,367 exhibition centres in person, stating that most persons in the rural areas turned up physically for the exercise whiles those in the urban areas mostly used the SMS short code.

Comparing those who verified their details in the provisional 2020 new voters register, the EC Chairperson said in 2016, 45.6 percent verified their names over a 21-day period whiles 46.9 percent verified their details in the new register over a 10-day period.
