A Member of the NPP Manifesto Committee, Mr Yaw Buaben Asamoah has stated that the NPP’s 2020 manifesto is strong and good enough to move the nation forward.

This comes after the party launched its manifesto on Saturday, August 22, 2020 in the Central Region.

Highlights of the manifesto includes; All tertiary students will get to acquire a student loan without a guarantor, Planting for food and jobs and the greenhouse projects will all be accelerated, Remote sensing technology to prevent ‘people from stealing power’.

Others are to; Construct SHSs in all 16 regions in Ghana and provide free wifi in all Senior High Schools and tertiary institutions in Ghana, Eliminate import duties on sanitary pads, GHC100 million seed money for a National Rental Assistance Scheme.

Speaking on the manifesto on Atinka 104.7 FM’s morning show, AM Drive with Nana Owoahene Acheampong, Yaw Buaben Asamoah said the party assessed its achievements and ways in moving the country forward and therefore fixed all in the manifesto, adding that the NPP government if given another chance will ensure every Ghanaian is employed.

He stated that the party’s focus is to invest in people businesses and support those who intend to start new businesses with capital.

“The Manifesto is good! We looked at what we have done and what we need to do. We have over 300 achievements. For the consolidation, we are ensuring that whatever we started, we will continue and also implement new initiatives that will move the nation forward,” he said.

He added that,”We want to invest into people’s businesses, and give capital to those who want to start new businesses so that unemployment will be reduced. When people get jobs and have money in their pockets, they can pay their taxes.”

Buaben Asamoah also reiterated the establishment of a Transport sector Recapitalization Project to assist drivers to exchange their old cars for new ones and pay the difference in cost over time.

“We are changing the face of ‘Work and Pay’. Government will support transport companies to replace old vehicles with new ones for commercial purposes, and to also give out vehicles to drivers so that they can work with it and pay in installments, that will create about 500,000 jobs in the transport sector, he said..

He added that,”We want to also give money to individuals who find it difficult to pay their rent with rent advance of about GHS10,000. We will pay for them so that they can also pay it in installments monthly.”

Meanwhile, Buaben Asamoah said students go through a lot of stress to get guarantors for their loans explaining therefore the need to give students loans without a guarantor.

“We have already implemented the Free SHS policy and now we are adding others to it. We have taken off the guarantor system because Students go through a lot before getting a guarantor,” he said.

Giving students loan without a guarantor step in right direction-NUGS

0

President of the National Union of Ghanaian Students (NUGS), Isaac Jay Hyde has said that government’s initiative on the guarantor system for student’s loan is a step in the right direction.

He recounted the stress students go through to get loans, saying that scrapping the guarantor system will go a long way to help students who have to go through a lot of stress to get guarantors.

Speaking with with Nana Owoahene Acheampong on Atinka 104.7 FM’s AM drive, he said, “It is true students go through a lot of stress to get guarantors. We have about 31,000 students who depend on loans because they are either poor or persons who cannot raise their personal funds to pay fees and therefore fall on the student loan.”

Isaac Jay Hyde explained further that,”Before acquiring a loan, a student needs two guarantors who are workers who have SSNIT contributions and in future if the student is unable to pay, it will be deducted from their pension allowance.”

He added that,”If you have to look for someone outside, it becomes difficult, and so if government says he will scrap the guarantor system it will help the students a lot.”

However, he said NUGS is also waiting for other political parties to bring their manifesto out for students to know and assess if they also have something better for students with regards to loans.

“We support government on that particular position. We will be happy if other political parties also bring out their manifesto for us to see what plans they have for students in that regard,” he said.

He noted that over the years, one of the challenges confronting students was the delay of loans, adding that students receive it and do not pay.

“We believe that if the NIA card is used, it will help track down every beneficiary,” he said.

He complained of the delay in payments of students loan, calling on authorities to ensure that student’s loans are paid in time .

To students who are owing, he urged them to also pay in time so that others can also benefit.

COVID-19: WHO cautious over plasma treatment approved in US

0

Earlier, we reported on the fact that the US had given emergency authorisation for the use of plasma to treat coronavirus patients.

When asked about the treatment later on Monday, World Health Organization (WHO) officials were cautious, describing it as “still an experimental treatment”. The risks and side effects associated with convalescent plasma must also be considered, they said, adding these could range from mild to severe.

“There are a number of clinical trials going on around the world looking at convalescent plasma compared to the standard of care,” Soumya Swaminathan, WHO chief scientist, said. “Only a few of them have actually reported interim results… and at the moment, it’s still very low-quality evidence.”

Many countries are using plasma as a coronavirus therapy, but it’s not yet clear how effective the treatment is, says BBC Health Editor Michelle Roberts.

Patients whose own immune systems are struggling to fight off the virus might get protection from a transfusion of antibody-rich plasma from someone who has recovered from Covid-19.

Convalescent plasma has been used to successfully treat other diseases, including Ebola.

But a recent UK analysis said it remained “very uncertain” whether plasma was beneficial for people admitted to hospital with Covid-19.

Mahama is the “most inconsistent” politician in Ghana – Mac Manu

The National Campaign Manager  for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Peter Mac Manu has urged Ghanaians to disregard the  frivolous promises being made by former President John Dramani Mahama, adding that the the latter is the most inconsistent politician in the country.

According to him, the NDC flagbearer makes different pronouncements on one issue at different times.

Mr. Mac Manu made the comments on the sidelines of the the inauguration of the NPP’s constituency and polling station campaign teams in the Western Region over the weekend.

Making reference to the ongoing Okada debate,  Mr. Mac Manu  recalled  how the then NDC government banned the operations of Okada riders  and that it was quite surprising that Mr Mahama is promising  to legalise  their (Okada) operations when he  wins power. He added that Mahama’s different stance on the free SHS policy is also a perfect example of his inconsistency.

“He is giving frivolous promises and we are not bothered because what the voters expect from us as a party in government is what we have delivered and looking forward to doing more”, he posited.

Mac Manu said during electioneering campaign, the person who matters most is the voter, adding that the voter is the heartbeat of every campaign and not the opposition candidate.

Mr. Mac Manu indicated that  the NPP has  “interacted with Ghanaians as a party to know their expectations and needs and that is what we are working out for them.”

According to him, NPP is not bothered about what former president Mahama goes about promising, “but  we are more concerned about the welfare of Ghanaian voters because they matter most in elections and governance.”

“To me it’s about what the voters want, so we have conducted research, polls and it has informed us on what we should do,” Mr. Mac Manu said.

“Even NPP gov't has legalised wee, why not Okada?”-NDC MP blasts Okada critics

The Member of Parliament for South Dayi in the Volta Region, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has lashed out at  the New Patriotic Party(NPP)  and its followers for kicking against the legalization of Okada in the country.

NDC flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has promised to legalize the booming transport business if he wins power again in a bid to reduce unemployment. However, he has come under a barrage of criticisms as opponents point to the carnage Okada riders cause on many of the country’s roads.

Defending the former President in a tweet Sunday, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, described the Okada critics as hypocrites, adding that the current government has seen it fit to legalise marijuana without taking into consideration the number of people being destroyed by the   dangerous substance.

Rwanda recorded 200 coronavirus cases on Sunday – the highest number in a single day since it reported its first case in March.

Most of the new cases were reported in the capital, Kigali.

The country now has more than 3,000 cases of the virus, with almost 1,000 of them recorded in the last two weeks.

The fatalities from the virus are now at 12.

Last week, the two biggest markets in the capital were closed for one week.

The rising cases have led to concerns on the possibility of new restrictions being imposed in the capital.

Rwanda was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to impose total lockdown after confirming its first cases.

The country recently reopened for tourism, but schools remain closed and mass sports and non-virtual entertainment activities remain banned.

Bayern Munich beat PSG to win Champions League

0

Bayern Munich won the European Cup for a sixth time by beating Paris St Germain 1-0 in Sunday’s Champions League final thanks to a goal from former PSG youth academy graduate Kingsley Coman.

France international Coman appeared at the back post to head home in the 59th minute, completing a sweeping move from Bayern.

Coman’s strike secured a treble for the Germans and punished PSG’s wastefulness in the first half as Neymar and Kylian Mbappe both failed to beat Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer from close range.

PSG were playing in their first European Cup final after billions of euros of investment from the Qatar royal family but they fell short on the final step to glory.

It was not the classic or the goal-feast that many had anticipated but it was high-tempo battle and in the end Bayern just about deserved to emerge victorious.

The German outfit claimed Europe’s elite club trophy by winning every game in the Champions League this season. The victory also completed a treble of trophies for Hansi Flick’s side after they also won the Bundesliga and the German Cup.

The Bayern coach opted to start with Coman instead of Ivan Perisic on the left flank and it was an inspired decision.

Jerome Boateng was deemed fit to start in the Bayern central defence, having recovered from a knock picked up in the semi-final win over Olympique Lyonnais.

PSG goalkeeper Keylor Navas returned to their starting lineup having recovered from injury.

After a cagey opening, Neymar suddenly burst into life in the 18th minute, scampering into the box and firing off a left-foot shot but Neuer’s outstretched leg foiled the Brazilian.

Four minutes later Bayern’s goal threat, Robert Lewandowski, was found in the box by a left wing cross from Alphonso Davies and given room to turn but his shot struck the post.

PSG were certainly asking questions of the Bayern defence and the livewire Angel Di Maria, after a quick exchange on the edge of the area, created space for a shot but his effort, with his weaker right foot, flew high and wide.

Bayern’s gamble to start Boateng looked mistaken when he hobbled off in the 25th minute, being replaced by Niklas Sule.

PSG’s industrious midfielder Ander Herrera had a fierce effort from distance deflected wide, while at the other end Lewandowski’s stooping header from close range forced a fine reflex save out of Navas.

Mbappe, PSG’s talented French World Cup-winning striker, should have done better just before the break when, after a smart one-two with Herrera, he shot straight at Neuer.

It was a scrappy start to the second half with both sides struggling to find any composure but the game came alive just before the hour mark.

After a well-worked move down the right Joshua Kimmich picked out Coman at the back post and he got behind Thilo Kehrer to head firmly into the bottom corner.

Coman threatened in the same area again moments later, after Thomas Mueller found him with a cross, and Thiago Silva had to block the volley.

Bayern were starting to look in control and PSG coach Thomas Tuchel responded by throwing on his Italian midfielder Marco Verratti in a bid to change the momentum.

But Flick’s side were in no mood to give up their lead and they fought for every ball with tenacity, reducing any chance PSG had to find openings for their expensive strikeforce.

One final opportunity did come, in stoppage time, when Mbappe broke down the inside-left channel and found Neymar who turned sharply but saw his shot go harmlessly wide.
