98 new courts and judges’ bungalows being built” – Akufo-Addo

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, says Government, through the Administrator of the District Assembly Common Fund, is constructing ninety-eight (98) Courts and bungalows for Judges in all sixteen (16) Regions of the country.

According to President Akufo-Addo, Government has also taken note of the inadequate numbers of courts in various parts of the country, resulting in citizens traversing long distances in order to gain access to the country’s courts.

“For example, there is no Court between Adjabeng and Amasaman in the Greater Accra Region, neither is there a Court between Adum in Kumasi and Asante Bekwai or Obuasi in the Ashanti Region. Indeed, it has been barely nine (9) months since I commissioned the three-storey Court Complex at Frafraha, in Adenta, Accra, and I am reliably informed that there are already some three thousand cases pending there,” he said.

Swearing into office sixteen (16) new Justices of the High Court on Wednesday, 16th September 2020, at a ceremony at Jubilee House, the seat of the nation’s presidency, the President said there would be eight (8) courts and eight (8) bungalows in Greater Accra; eight (8) courts and eight (8) bungalows in Volta; four (4) courts and eight (4) bungalows in Oti; twelve (12) courts and ten (10) bungalows in Eastern; and seven (7) courts and eight (7) bungalows in Western.

Additionally, there would be four (4) courts and four (4) bungalows in Western North; four (4) courts and four (4) bungalows in Central; five (5) courts and five (5) bungalows in North East; twenty (20) courts and fourteen (14) bungalows in Ashanti; eight (8) courts and eight (8) bungalows in Ahafo; four (4) courts and six (4) bungalows in Bono; and five (5) courts and five (5) bungalows in Bono East.

There would also be three (3) courts and three (3) bungalows in Northern; three (3) courts and three (3) bungalows in Savannah; two (2) courts and two (2) bungalows in Upper West; and three (3) courts and three (3) bungalows in Upper East.

To the sixteen (16) Justices, the President reminded them that the dispensation of justice requires that application of the laws of the land must occur, in the hallowed words of the judicial oath, without fear or favour, affection or ill-will, that is, without recourse to the political, religious or ethnic affiliations of any person before you.

“When a citizen falls foul of the law, that citizen, high or low, must be dealt with accordingly, and the law enforcement agencies, including you, our new judges, must ensure this is done. That is the true meaning of the concept of equality before the law,” he said.

To assist them on this path, President Akufo-Addo stated that his Government, since his assumption of office, has, since my assumption of office, introduced a number of policy measures to help bridge the technology-gap, explaining that they are necessary to shore up the nation’s reputation as a country governed in accordance with the rule of law.

“That is why, last year, I launched the e-justice system, which is designed to leverage technology in the delivery of justice. I encourage all of you to take full advantage of the e-justice system, to expedite the conduct of cases that come before you, and in the management of the Court. The transparent and efficient delivery of justice builds confidence in citizens, businesses and the investor community,” he added.

New Justices of the High Court

The Justices of the High Court sworn in by the President are Her Honour Eva Bannerman-Williams, His Honour Emmanuel Bart-Plange Brew, His Honour Yaw Owoahene Acheampong, His Honour Samuel Boakye-Yiadom, His Honour Abdul Yusif Asibey, Mrs. Elfreda Amy Dankyi, Mr. Samuel Faraday Johnson, Ms. Sheila Minta, Her Honour Audrey Kocuvie-Tay, Nana Yaw Gyamfi Frimpong, Mr. Ernest Yao Gaewu, Mr. Solomon Oppong-Twumasi, Mr. Charles Bentum, Mr. Joseph Adu-Owusu Agyeman, Mr. William Osei-Kuffour, and Mr. Douglas Seidu.

With the High Court having “jurisdiction in all matters, and, in particular, in civil and criminal matters, and such original, appellate and other jurisdiction as may be conferred on it by this Constitution or any other law”, and also “jurisdiction to enforce the Fundamental Human Rights and Freedoms guaranteed by this Constitution”, he noted that much of judicial work begins and ends there.

“It is, therefore, critical for the growth of the nation that the High Court commands the respect of the people by the quality of its justice, as well as by the comportment of its judges,” he added.

Rawlings receives Malian military leaders

0

Ghana’s former President, Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings, has urged the new leadership in Mali to use the transition period to exhibit exceptional leadership for the country and usher her into a prosperous era.

The former President made the call when a four-man delegation of the National Committee for the Salvation of the People (CNSP) led by its Chairman, Colonel Assimi Goïta called on him on Tuesday.

He urged the Malian leadership to mobilise their people into taking up productive activity through a positive vision to boost the country’s development. He also advised them to empower and encourage the people to own their political climate and to improve on the quality of multiparty democracy that Western powers “have hung around our necks”.

“The level of corruption that has become an integral part of multiparty democracy has created a general climate of stress and tension that may destabilize some areas in our region. It is unfortunate that the world is being forced into multiparty democracy with corruption and violence rather than other forms of democratic practices with none or minimal corruption. Unfortunately, the West appears to favour corruptible political tendencies in order to continue to dominate our security and economy,” the former President stated.

Former President Rawlings also encouraged the transitional unit to govern with humility and diligence and inspire the people to fight and defy corruption and injustice.

He said he was dutifully passing on ECOWAS leadership’s concerns while sharing his own political experiences and observations.

The meeting took place after ECOWAS leaders held an Extraordinary meeting with the Malian leadership at Peduase in Ghana, to discuss political developments in Mali.

Colonel Assimi Goïta was accompanied by Colonel Ismaël Wagué, Major Talibe Konte and Captain Demba N’daw. Also present was the Malian Ambassador to Ghana, Abdoul Kader Toure.

0

Engineer David Osafo Adonteng, Director of Planning and Programs at the National Road Transport Authority (NRSA) has asked owners of commercial vehicles to make the maintenance of their vehicles a priority.

Engineer David Osafo Adonteng made this statement after 11 persons perished with scores in critical condition following a gory accident involving a cargo truck and two buses at Kyekyewere on the Accra- Kumasi Highway in the Eastern Region .

The fully loaded Burkina Faso bound DAF Cargo Truck from Accra direction heading towards Kumasi burst a tyre and veered off its single lane, crushing two buses fully loaded with passengers from Kumasi to Accra.

Reacting to the news on Atinka FM’s AM Drive, hosted by Ekourba Gyasi, Engineer David Osafo Adonteng, Director of Planning and Programs at the National Road Safety commission (NRSC) explained that vehicle owners usually leave the maintenance of their vehicles to the mercy of drivers who often than not do nothing or less, with respect to maintenance.

Engineer David Osafo Adonteng noted that  the NRSC’s investigations with drivers in the past revealed that vehicle owners sit unconcerned when drivers raise complaints about the maintenance of the vehicles.

“We have spoken with the driver of the Burkina Faso bound DAF Cargo Truck and he told us that his tyre got burst when he got to Kyekyerewere which resulted in his vehicle veering off its single lane and eventually crashing into the two buses. It is time we had a discussion with the other side, I mean the car owners of these vehicles. It’s the duty of the car owners to make sure that vehicles are worthy for the road. Some of the car owners do not listen to complaints brought by the drivers of their vehicles forgetting that it can harm others”, he explained.

CyberGhana takes delivery of equipment for ultra-modern Cyber Security Labs

0

CyberGhana, a humanitarian based Non-Governmental Organisation based in Ghana has taken delivery of equipment for the establishment of ultra-modern cybersecurity laboratories across the country under its skill-based training scheme dubbed NICESTEP.

The National Institute for Cybersecurity, Technology and Engineering programme, NICESTEP, is an initiative by Cyberghana and funded by UK’s RAENG, and LLYODs Register Foundation.

As sighted on Asempa News, NICESTEP was designed to train young people in cybersecurity, software engineering, artificial intelligence and its related discipline. The training is expected to be run at top three selected technical universities in Cape Coast, Sunyani and Bolgatanga.

The project which is the first of its kind in Ghana comes at a time when the country’s need for cutting edge expertise to detect, analyze and mitigate the rising cases of cyber attacks is a top priority.

Besides the obvious solutions CyberGhana’s initiative presents to government and corporate institutions by helping them to secure their systems and networks; the projects seek to address the disturbing trend of high unemployment by producing thousands of engineers to solve problems of this relatively untapped area.

CyberGhana recognizes the fact that, there are countless young people who desire to build a career in technology, but are unable to pursue their dreams due to financial constraint. It is in the interest of such individuals that CyberGhana in collaboration with its international donors are providing specialized courses in IT-based engineering at no cost.

The $400,000.00 skill development project is expected to be set in full gear at the soon to be furnished cyber laboratories at our partner institutions; Cape Coast Technical University, Sunyani Technical University and Bolgatanga Technical University in October 2020.
