Afenyo-Markin Accuses Government of Harassment Against Akwatia MP

Afenyo-Markin

Majority Leader of Parliament, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused the government of conspiring with the Koforidua High Court to target Ernest Kumi, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia.

His claims follow comments by Interior Minister, Hon. Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, who defended efforts to arrest Kumi after the court issued a bench warrant against him for contempt.

Afenyo-Markin criticized the National Investigation Bureau (NIB), alleging that both the judiciary and the government were manipulating the legal system for political gain.

“The NIB attempted to arrest Honorable Ernest Kumi of Akwatia. We find it very strange that the minister is justifying their actions. Clearly, there is collusion between the government and the High Court in Koforidua to apply their own version of the law,” – he said.

He also questioned the enforcement of the court order, arguing that the registrar—not the Eastern Region’s National Security Coordinator—should have been responsible for executing it.

Afenyo-Markin announced his intention to file a parliamentary question to demand explanations from the Attorney General, vowing to hold the government accountable for what he described as an attempt to undermine the rule of law.
