The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has applauded the Ghana Police Service for their recent breakthrough in the long-running investigation into the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale, with the arrest of Daniel Owusu Koranteng (aka Amakye), a suspect in the case.

Koranteng, who was arraigned on March 19, 2025, was remanded in police custody by the Madina District Court and will reappear on April 1, 2025. The arrest marks the first significant development in the case since Suale‘s tragic murder on January 16, 2019, and comes after years of persistent pressure from the GJA for justice.

In a press release issued today, the GJA commended the efforts of senior police officers, including Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno and DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), for their dedication to bringing the suspect to face justice.

“This is a giant step towards unraveling the barbaric murder of Ahmed Suale,” the GJA said in a statement signed by the Executive Secretary, Kofi Yeboah.

“We commend the Police for their unwavering efforts in the face of mounting pressure, and we hope that this will lead to further progress in bringing all suspects involved to justice.”

Despite the arrest, the GJA remains cautiously optimistic, urging the Police not to rest on their laurels but to continue their efforts in bringing justice to Suale’s family and the broader media community.

The association also reaffirmed its commitment to taking further action if the prosecution does not progress swiftly.

“If we do not see any concrete developments by the end of March 2025,”- the GJA stated, “we will take the case to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Community Court of Justice.”

This statement echoes the GJA’s previous warnings and underscores its determination to ensure accountability, not only for Ahmed Suale’s murder but also for numerous other cases of journalist assault that remain unresolved in Ghana.

The GJA has already informed its international partners, including the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), of the arrest and prosecution of Koranteng. Both international bodies have expressed their support and are also exploring avenues to bring the case to global attention.

The GJA stressed that the delay in bringing Suale’s killers to justice had severely impacted Ghana’s World Press Freedom Index, tarnishing the country’s reputation as a haven for free expression in Africa. With this in mind, the GJA emphasized that justice for Ahmed Suale is not only crucial for his family but for the broader fight for media freedom in Ghana and across the African continent.

“The death of Ahmed Suale and the lack of action on the part of the authorities have been a major setback for press freedom in Ghana,” the GJA noted.

“We will continue to push until we see justice for Suale, and we are prepared to take this case to international forums if necessary.”

As the case continues, the GJA remains resolute in its pursuit of justice, confident that with continued pressure and international support, the truth will eventually prevail.
