Akosombo Dam Spillage: GHc40m spent on victims, affected communities

The government has so far spent about GHC40 million to support victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage disaster.

The Chief of Staff, Frema Osei Opare who is also the Chairperson for the Inter-Ministerial Committee on floods, disclosed the information at a press conference in Accra yesterday.

She indicated that the disbursement forms part of efforts to mitigate the effect of the spillage in various affected communities.

According to her, the government will further release additional funds to support the victims.

 Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education, estimated that approximately 42,526 students were impacted by the spillage.

Furthermore, 1,561 teachers were affected across 121 institutions situated in those communities.

Furthermore, he disclosed that the reopening of St Kizito School has been delayed by the government on account of the severe damage sustained.

As a result, he declared that his Ministry had acquired fresh textbooks for the affected institutions.
