The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has called for unity and gratitude following the party’s decisive victory in the 2024 general elections, describing the outcome as a historic milestone in Ghana’s democratic journey.
Speaking on the second day of the NDC’s Thank You Tour in the Central Region, Mr. Asiedu Nketia expressed appreciation to Ghanaians for their support, noting that the party’s attainment of a two-thirds majority in Parliament is a rare achievement. He recalled the 1992 elections, when the boycott of parliamentary polls by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) resulted in a similar parliamentary configuration.
According to him, the 2024 electoral success was not the effort of party members alone but a collective national achievement involving diverse stakeholders.
“If we see the victory of the election in favour of the NDC government, then we must thank everyone who supported us to win — not only members of the NDC, but also church leaders, Muslim leaders, and traditional authorities,” he said.
Mr. Asiedu Nketia explained that in the lead-up to the elections, the party appealed to all Ghanaians, including non-members, to unite behind the NDC in the interest of national development. He said the victory of John Dramani Mahama offers an opportunity to continue and complete his long-term vision for Ghana’s development.
Traditional Leaders Pledge Support for Development
Also addressing the gathering, the Omanhene of Ekumfi, Ode3fo Akyin VIII, reaffirmed the commitment of traditional authorities to development initiatives in the area.
He stressed that chieftaincy institutions do not engage in partisan politics but remain willing to support government programmes that bring tangible benefits to their people.
The traditional ruler disclosed that following a pledge by President Mahama to construct a market for the people of Ekumfi, traditional leaders have released 125 acres of land to facilitate the project. He said the proposed market is expected to significantly support women traders and stimulate local economic activity.
Ode3fo Akyin VIII further urged political leaders and party executives in the Central Region to remain united and work collaboratively to advance the development of Ekumfi and surrounding communities.
He called on all stakeholders to contribute meaningfully toward the socio-economic progress of the area, noting that unity and cooperation remain essential to sustained development.
