A mechanized borehole has been constructed for the pupils and teachers of the Saint Francis Anglican Basic School at Awutu Bontrase in the central region.
The facility was constructed by Ghana Outlook, a UK based NGO, in partnership with the Presbyterian Relief Services and Development at a cost of GHC26,000. It follows a report by Atinka TV on the plight of the school in January this year.
The pupils were drinking from a stagnant water source in a dugout located close to the school.
Apart from three pupils who had fallen in the pit and died, teachers complained that the situation was affecting teaching and learning as pupils had to break from classes in search of drinking water.
But four months after the report, the situation is different; the over four hundred pupils and staff now have a mechanized borehole on the compound, providing a reliable, clean and safe drinking water.
The facility, was single-handedly funded by one Hilary Smith, a member of the Ghana outlook group in the UK.
At the commissioning ceremony, the Ghana representative of the group, William Gyasi Mensah said the group was touched by the documentary on the plight of the school, and decided to take immediate action to save the situation.
‘We had to suspend all other projects to ensure that no other child dies in this school in search of drinking water’.
The staff and pupils of the school could not hide their joy. The headmaster Paul Awotwe, indicates that ‘the facility has come to solve a major challenge of lack of safe drinking for the school’.
The National Director of the Presbyterian Relief Services and Development, Rev. Daniel Edmund kofi Asante asked the school authorities to ensure proper protection and maintenance of the facility.
