“Ban on used appliances in the best interest of Ghanaians” – Energy Commission

Hubert Zan, an assistant manager for Energy Efficiency at the Energy Commission, says the decision to ban the importation of used appliances is in the best interest of the country.

This in in line with the decision of the Concerned Second Hand Dealer Association to protest plans by government to ban the importation of used appliance into the country.

The group has argued that the decision has the tendency to affect their livelihood, particularly under the current economic situation.

Speaking at a press conference, President of the Association, Asare Daniel, revealed that the ban will take away jobs that feed millions of people, forgetting the contribution of the group to Ghana’s GDP.

“Now that there is economic hardship all over the world, why would one say they are taking away jobs that feed millions of people in this country forgetting our contribution to Ghana’s GDP.”

“If the sitting government is seeking assistance from the IMF, which will prevent them from employing workers, where would they find jobs for us and the graduates in our homes due to the government’s inability to get jobs for them?” “We are very much convinced of hearing something good from the Energy Commission and the government,” Daniel Asare added.

Reacting to the issue on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host Kaakyire Ofori Ayim, Hubert Zan, an Assistant Manager for Energy Efficiency at the Energy Commission said the energy commission is committed to ensure that all appliances that come into the country meets the standards of the commission.

He added, however, that if an importer believes that a particular used appliance being imported is more efficient, there is a certificate that should accompany the appliance.

“We are interested in brand new appliances, and even with that, the appliance should meet the minimum energy performance standard.” We will work with the law to ensure that all imported new appliances meet the standard,” he added.
