Bawku: Curfew was imposed over bloodshed fears- Report

curfew

Atinka TV’s Upper East Regional Correspondent, Nurudeen Ibrahim has asserted that curfew was placed on the Bawku Township in the Upper East Region because the police was scared that there would be more bloodshed.

Although there has been a brawl between two clans over the rituals of their dead Chief before his final funeral rites, he said the police did not intervene swiftly until things started getting out of hand.

Already, some persons had been wounded as a result of the clash between the two clans who felt they had the right to install a new Chief and as well perform rituals for their Chief.

On Wednesday, November 23, 2021, the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) placed a curfew on the town due to a clash between two families over the funeral rights of their Chief who died about two years ago.

All persons were instructed to sleep by 4 p.m. and wake up 6 a.m.

Aside that, the wearing of smock was banned in the town because according to REGSEC, some criminals or unscrupulous elements hide arms and ammunitions in the smocks and attack opponents or innocent civilians.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, Nurudeen Ibrahim said,”The fight has been going on for about three weeks. The police did not come in early but yesterday they realised that there would be further bloodshed if nothing was done.”

For the ban of smock, Nurudeen Ibrahim said only Chiefs are allowed to wear them in their Palace and not outside.
