General Secretary for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Aseidu Nketia, says the reassignment of Bryan Acheampong is a clear indication that the president supports violence.
President Nana Akufo-Addo reassigned two Ministers in his government.
A statement signed by Eugene Arhin, Communications Director at the Presidency, indicated that Bryan Acheampong has been moved from the Ministry of National Security to the Ministry of Interior as Minister of State.
The statement further said Henry Quartey, deputy Minister for Interior, is now Deputy Minister at the Ministry of National Security.
The Ayawaso West by-election took place on 31st January 2019 after the death of the incumbent Member of Parliament, MP Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko, on 21st November 2018.
Lydia Alhassan of the New Patriotic Party was elected with 69% of the vote.
Violence, however, erupted in the area of the La-Bawaleshie polling station two hours after the election had started leading to some casualties.
President Akufo Addo instituted the Emile Short Commission to look into the chaos and come out with recommendations.
The Commission after its findings recommended Mr. Bryan Acheampong be reprimanded for his ultimate responsibility as Minister in authorizing an operation of that character on a day of an election in a built up area.
Aseidu Nketia in an interview with Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive noted that the new appointment is a total disregard for the Emile Short Commission, which worked on the Ayawaso West Wuogon.
He explained that the Akufo Addo government is noted for promoting wrongdoers which to a large extent, encourages others to tow that line.
“Bryan Acheampong’s appointment is a total disregard for the Emile Short Commission. He will definitely will definitely do that again. If you go wrong and you are promoted for that wrong, how you will change? You will definitely continue with the wrong”, he added.
He added that elsewhere, Bryan Acheampong would have resigned as a result of the confusion that erupted during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.
