Cancel Independence Day celebrations to save money – Dumelo

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary aspirant for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Setor Dumelo, has asked the ruling government to suspend the 6th March independence celebrations to cut costs.

This statement by the politician is in line with the 66th Independence Day National Celebrations scheduled for March 6, 2023, in Ho, in the Volta Region.

Ho will host the national annual celebration as part of the government’s policy to rotate the event among the regions to enhance national cohesion.

Mr. Lord Commey, Director of Operations at the Office of the President made this known when he led members of the National Planning Committee for the event into the Region on Friday to inform traditional authorities of the development.

“ The independence square alone cannot continue to host this key celebration of Ghana’s freedom. He has decided this year that it is the turn of the Volta Region – the oxygen city of Ghana,” he added.

Reacting to the celebrations in a tweet, John Dumelo noted that considering the current economic crises it will be prudent for the President of the Republic of Ghana to cancel all state, regional and district Independence Day celebrations.

He asked the President to consider a National broadcast to mark the day as it is done for the Covid-19 updates.

According to the actor turned Politician a live broadcast will save the country millions of cedis.

“ Greetings @NAkufoAddo, respectfully we are in hard times, can you please cancel all date, regional and district Independence Day celebrations? You can do your usual “fellow Ghanaians” broadcast on TV. This will save us millions on cedis. Thanks so much,” John Dumelo said in a tweet.
