Commissioning of Asomdwee Park: NDC justifies boycott

The Deputy Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Godwin Ako Gun has explained why the NDC has decided to boycott an invitation by the Atta Mills Institute to the inauguration of the renovated Asomdwe Park.

The Former President, Mr John Evans Atta Mills who died on July 24, 2012 was buried at the ‘Asomdwe Park’.

Prior to Sunday, July 24, 2022, which marks the 10th anniversary of the death of Atta Mills, the NDC although had outlined a programme to commemorate the day, was given an invitation to witness a memorial thanksgiving service and the inauguration of a renovated Asomdwee Park. But they made it clear that they were not interested.

Speaking on Atinka TV‘s morning show, Ghana Nie with Abena Dufie Asare Agyepong, Mr Godwin Ako Gun explained that the NDC in collaboration with Atta Mills’ family had planned to visit the grave of Atta Mills at exactly 12.30 p.m. and do a memorial service for him.

He said they planned that at exactly 1.40 p.m., they would observe a minute silence for Atta Mills since it was the exact time he died in 2012.

Unfortunately, Mr Godwin Ako Gun said they had an invitation from the Atta Mills Institute that it had refurbished the Asomdwee Park so they were inviting them to witness its commissioning which will be done by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo.

According to him, 20 cards were delivered to the party, with no specifications of the bearers of the card, indicating that they were not really needed at the event.

He was of the belief that the invitation would have been more credible if names of those they were expecting were written on the cards.

Mr Godwin Ako Gun stated that for a fact that a private company invited them does not make the NDC want to attend the programme.

“Ideally, we know that the place is a National Security Area, and so if someone will invite us, it should be the Coastal Development Authority (CODA) or National Security but this time around, an organisation is inviting us. For the letter, they arranged about 20 cards and brought it, not even with a courtesy which states that this card is going to Johnson Asiedu Nketia or Ofosu Ampofo and so if you want to attend, you pick one and then you go. Meanwhile, when it comes to protocol, the government has a protocol department that oversees all government programmes so it means we are not even needed there in the first place. And for the fact that an institute or a private person is inviting us, it is not something that as a national event, we would want to be part of it,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said the President was being divisive by using Mr Koku Anyidoho, who is the Founder of Atta Mills Institute, against them, knowing very well that Mr Koku Anyidoho has been sacked from the NDC.
