Consumer protection advocate Nana Kwaku Agyemang has praised the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) for its prompt and decisive action in suspending the production of Tasty Tom tomato products, following concerns over their safety.
Speaking on AtinkaTV’s Ghana Nie program hosted by Bernard Lav, Agyemang described the FDA’s response as “very swift and appropriate,” commending the authority for placing public health above all else.
“The suspension of the entire production line is the best decision under the circumstances,” he said. “It signals that the FDA is taking this issue seriously, and it builds public confidence in the regulatory system.”
Agyemang added that this kind of swift regulatory enforcement is exactly what consumers expect when there are suspicions of contamination or breaches in safety protocols.
However, he stressed that the issue must not end with a suspension. He called for accountability within the company behind Tasty Tom, suggesting that internal leadership failures may have contributed to the current situation.
“Heads must roll at the factory,” Agyemang said firmly. “If the investigations – which the government appears to be keeping quiet about – prove to be true, there should be severe legal consequences. We cannot compromise on food safety.”
He also called on the company to come out publicly and transparently explain what went wrong.
“The company must speak to its customers. Ghanaians deserve to know what exactly happened, what went wrong, and what steps are being taken to correct it,” he said. “Silence only breeds mistrust and speculation.”
While investigations are still ongoing, the suspension of Tasty Tom’s production has already sparked conversations about food safety, regulatory oversight, and the responsibility of food manufacturers to uphold the highest standards of hygiene and quality control.
Agyemang’s comments echo broader public calls for transparency and consumer protection in Ghana’s food and beverage sector.
