A former Deputy Minister for Defence, Major RTD. Derek Oduro says the continuous chaos in the 8th Parliament under the 4th Republic is disgraceful.

Ghanaian Members of Parliament engaged in another physical confrontation on Monday night, December 20th, 2021 during a debate on the controversial E-Levy.

The incident occurred just when the MPs were about to cast their vote on the matter.

The Speaker, Alban Bagbin was not in the House when the incident occurred.

Some MPs were captured punching their colleagues at will as the debate got out of hand.

The Finance Committee of Parliament had given the green light for the 1.75% E-Levy to be discussed on the floor of the House following a majority decision at the Committee level.

A similar incident occurred in parliament on Wednesday, December 1, 2021 after First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei-Wusu ruled in favour of the NPP following Minority’s motion to set aside Tuesday’s 2022 budget approval.

Speaking on Atinka TV‘s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, Major RTD. Derek Oduro who has served four terms in Parliament, observed that the 8th Parliament had become noisier than any other parliament under the fourth Republic.

He was sad about the incident, saying the continuous chaos in the house was distasteful.

“I was in parliament during the 4th, 5th, 6th and the 7th parliament but this 8th parliament has become noisy.
It is a noble institution; it is a place where discipline should be the order of the day. We are ambassadors of the whole nation . The entire nation is in parliament and they are expected to make laws for the people, but if it happens that there is always chaos in the 8th parliament, and after that they will come and apologise and they continue to do the same thing then it is disgraceful and it is not good,” he said.
