Council of State Elections: Political figures contesting not against Ghana’s constitution-Expert

Council of State

A Political and Governance Expert, Fredrick Oduro says it is not against the constitution of Ghana for political figures to contest as Council of State Members.

His comments come following concerns raised by many Ghanaians on how Political figures have taken interest in contesting to be elected as Members of the Council of State.

This has been debated by some Ghanaians as to who is qualified to contest in terms of age and political affiliation.

The laws of this country stipulate that a person qualified to be a Member of Parliament can contest the Member of Council position but it has been made to believe that such positions are occupied by persons who are of high pedigree.

Based on this, Fredrick Oduro stressed that it is not against the constitution of Ghana for political figures to contest to be voted for as Council of State Members.

He said, though it is not political, the constitutions also do not prevent a political figures from contesting.

Mr. Oduro who was speaking at the sidelines of the 2025 Council of State elections on Atinka Fm’s Midday News said as the constitution stipulates, any one qualified to be a Member of Parliament can contest the Member of Council position.

Touching on age, Mr. Oduro indicated that experience and competence are the key qualities any person vying to contest that position should have.
