The Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, has debunked claims of ‘Omicron’ variant in Ghana.
Another variant of the coronavirus has been detected. The Omicron’ variant was first detected by South African scientists.
The variant has, however, has been found in several countries around the world.
There have been unfounded claims that the virus has been detected in Ghana.
Addressing the general public in a covid-19 update presser, the Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye noted that the GHS has not identified any one with the Omicron’ variant in Ghana.
“Omicron: we have not identified one in Ghana. All people who have tested positive at the airport are sequenced; their samples are sequenced. We also pick samples from our reference labs across the country to do sequencing. Currently, they have a bunch of about 160 which they’re working but there’s been no indication of Omicron in Ghana. So, all those messages flying around, it’s not true. There’s no case in Ghana,” Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye told press men.

Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye also revealed that the GHS has declared December a month of vaccination against COVID-19.
He said the campaign will target specific venues and groups and that Unvaccinated persons will be denied entry into sports stadia, restaurants, beaches, among others.
“We are declaring December as a month of vaccination and it will be launched by the Minister on Tuesday. This mandate will be applicable in January and this mandate will become effective,” he added.
He noted that by the December campaign Security personnel, staff of tertiary and secondary institutions, commercial drivers and bus conductors, government workers, the various arms of government and health workers are all expected to be vaccinated in December.
Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye has also urged Ghanaians to continue observing the COVID-19 safety protocols.
