Covid-19: Special treatment center being prepared for mental health patients

Head of the Ghana Mental Health Authority, DR. Akwesi Osei has said a place is being prepared to serve as a treatment center for people who have mental illness and have also contracted the coronavirus.
Dr. Kwesi Osei revealed this to Atinka news when he was  reacting to a news report that a mentally ill woman who contracted the coronavirus  had been rejected by one of  the  treatment centers.
“The infected woman was admitted to the acute care ward of the government-run hospital on April 20, 2020 and developed symptoms within days. She was tested for Covid-19 and transferred to an isolation unit on April 23, and her test was confirmed positive on April 27.
After the woman’s positive Covid-19 diagnosis, the hospital attempted to transfer her to the Covid-19 treatment center, but the authorities refused to admit her because she was a mental health patient.
According to Dr. Osei, it  took the intervention of the Director General of the Ghana Health Service for the patient to be admitted.
Dr Osei then revealed to Atinka news that a place is being prepared at the  Pantang Psychiatric Hospital to serve as a treatment center for people who have mental illness and have also contracted the coronavirus.
He said the treatment center when completed will give special care to mentally ill patients with covid-19.
