CPP’s participation in 2024 election hangs in the balance

In the midst of Ghana’s approaching general election, the Convention People’s Party (CPP), renowned for its pivotal role in the nation’s independence, finds itself at a crossroads as it navigates critical decisions ahead of the polls.
The party, which has yet to announce a flagbearer, faces mounting pressure as the clock ticks towards election day.

In an exclusive interview with Atinka TV’s Midday News Anchor, Ebenezer Madugu, Sylvester Sarpong Saprano, Director of Communications for CPP, shed light on the party’s current electoral strategy and challenges.

When asked about CPP’s plans for the upcoming election, Sarpong admitted, “At the moment, we are still working on it.” He emphasized a commitment to transparency and adherence to constitutional processes in their electoral procedures, acknowledging past legal challenges faced by the party due to unconstitutional practices.

Sarpong highlighted the role of an electoral committee led by Wing Commander Patrick Sogbordzor, noting that while their initiative could benefit the party, it must align with constitutional standards to avoid legal pitfalls.
“Doing things unconstitutionally is what keeps landing us in court,” – Sarpong cautioned, underscoring the need for procedural integrity.

Pressed on whether CPP intends to participate in the 2024 election, Sarpong expressed confidence, stating, “I think so. I am sure we will contest.” Despite ongoing internal deliberations, he affirmed the party’s commitment to finalizing its stance soon.

The absence of a declared flagbearer for CPP, a critical decision typically made well in advance of elections, remains a conspicuous concern for the party faithful and political observers alike. With Ghanaian voters eager for clarity and leadership from the historic party, CPP faces mounting anticipation to solidify its electoral strategy and leadership.

As Ghana inches closer to its electoral milestone, the Convention People’s Party’s ability to navigate internal challenges and present a unified front will undoubtedly shape its role in the nation’s political landscape.

For now, Ghanaians await further developments from CPP headquarters as the countdown to December’s election continues.
