The Deputy General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahene, has revealed that judging from the way the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is handling the Supreme Court’s verdict on the voting rights of the deputy Speaker of Parliament, the NDC will certainly call for war if the 2024 general election do not go in their favour.

This statement by the NPP kingpin comes after former President John Dramani Mahama described the ruling by the Supreme Court which allows Deputy Speakers’ to enjoy voting rights as regrettable.

Former President Mahama says if the deputy speakers will be allowed to vote, then they must take part, first, in the voice vote.

“The first vote in most cases taken on a motion in Parliament is a voice vote. The Presiding officer, whether the Speaker or any of his/her deputy speakers is supposed to listen to which is the loudest, the ayes or the nays and make a determination. If the deputy speakers are allowed to vote, then they must take part, first, in the voice vote. If you are presiding and can shout aye or nay with your party in the voice vote, how do you impartially determine which was the loudest?”, Former President Mahama posted on Facebook.

Speaking to the issue with host of Atinka FM’s AM Drive Kaakyire Ofori Ayim, Deputy General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahene expressed disappointment in the commentary by the NDC with respect to the Supreme court ruling on the voting rights of a Deputy Speaker.

Nana Obiri Boahene said he is disappointed in the comments by Alban Bagbin and former President Mahama with respect to the voting rights of the deputy Speaker of Parliament.

“I am very sad, it’s so painful. I can predict that from the look of things and judging from the commentary, the NDC will call for war if the 2024 elections do not go in their favour. How can a whole speaker describe the president’s statement as myopic? It’s just sad,” Nana Obiri Boahene told Kaakyire Ofori Ayim.
