District Level Elections : We’re ready for smooth, incident free election- EC

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs Jean Mensa has assured Ghanaians that the Electoral Commission has put in place all necessary arrangements and modalities for a smooth and incident free election at the District Level Elections (DLEs).

The District Level Elections which will be held on Tuesday, December 19,2023 entails the district assembly elections and the unit committee elections.

The elections are held every four years to elect members to the assembly and unit committees.

“We have put in place adequate arrangements and we believe that the elections will go on smoothly and safe without a hitch. Experience over the years show that this election is not highly participated and we would like to entreat all Ghanaians and assure them that the electoral Commission has put in place all necessary arrangements and modalities have been put in place for a smooth, incident free election and we would like to entreat all Ghanaians to take their time to go to their polling stations to cast their votes,” she said.

Security

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Monday, Decmber 18, 2023, Mrs Jean Mensa noted that the EC has engaged the security agencies to provide enough security at each polling station across the country during the election, adding that the election security taskforce has been ignited at the district, national and regional levels across the country.

Additionally, she said the Commission has provided a list of all polling stations and flashpoints to the security to ensure the election is conducted peacefully without any hitch.

PWDs

Mrs Jean Mensa entreated eligible voters to give preferential treatment to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), the aged and breastfeeding mothers at polling stations so that they do not join long queues.

“We entreat eligible voters to allow them to vote in a timely manner should they arrive at the polling stations,” she said.

For those who are visually impaired, she said the Commission has provided tactile jackets and ballot papers for them to cast their votes.

Collation

Mrs Jean Mensa said the collation of the results will be done at the respective electoral area collation centres.

According to her, winners of the elections will be declared immediately at the collation centres and copies of the final results will be posted on the electoral area collation centres.

She again entreated all Ghanaians to go to their polling stations to cast their votes.

“Let us make this election meaningful. We are all aware that development starts from the district level and therefore it is important as citizens that we have a say and a stake in who brings development to our various districts,” she added.

Mrs Jean Mensa also advised all voters to refrain from acts that will jeopardize the peaceful conduct of the election.
