Some divers in Accra have expressed worry over the rampant clamping down of their vehicles by the various metropolitan and municipal assembly’s taskforce for parking at un-authorised places.

Earlier this year, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) appealed to vehicle owners to refrain from parking at un-authorised places, urging them to make use of designated car parks provided within the city to avoid their cars being clamped and towed.

Although the directive is not new, in March this year, the AMA and all the Assemblies started re-enforcing the Un-authorised Car Parking and Parking Regulation to ensure that vehicles are not in the ways of others.

Speaking on Atinka TV‘s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, a Victim who usually resides at Kokomlemle, Robert Melorme complained that the Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly taskforce has been clamping down vehicles unnecessarily.

Although he understands vehicles parked at Unauthorised places are liable to be clamped down, he said where some of the vehicles are parked are not dangerous, explaining that most of the times, they park the vehicles at residential areas.

Robert Melorme said when Ubber drivers come to pick their customers, sometimes their vehicles are clamped down.

He also complained that even when people park their vehicles to buy food, their cars are being clamped down.

He said the taskforce sometimes clamps down stationary vehicles that have triangles on them and when they are towed to the Assembly, they are asked to pay about GHC350 and or as well asked to pay a spot fine of GHC15O before their vehicles are released.

According to Robert, he has paid about five times since his vehicle has been clamped down for five times.

Meanwhile, he said all attempts to engage the authorities of the Municipal Assembly has proved futile, appealing to the Authorities to address the issue.

Another Victim, David Lartey also said his vehicle was clamped down at Madina by the La Nkwantanang Madina Municipal Assembly when he parked his vehicle to buy food.

He said there was no indication, or road signs that stated that no one should park at that particular place.

He also therefore urged the Authorities to educate the taskforce on how to carry out their duties moving forward.
