Some parts of Accra experienced earth tremor last Saturday, March 2, few minutes after 11:30 pm.
The tremor, which measured 3.9 on Richter scale occurred around Gbawe, Sowutuom, Old Kasoa Barrier, New Bortianor, Awoshie, Abelemkpe and McCarthy Hill.
A similar earth tremor occurred in December 2018 around Weija and Gbawe in the Ga South Municipality.
Speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, the Senior Seismologist at the Geological Survey Authority (GSA) stated that earthquakes do not come in vacuum. He noted that looming earthquakes usually give caution which usually manifest in tremors.
According to him, these frequent tremors is an indication that the fault lines were active and that earthquake could occur.
“For instance, the earthquake that occurred in the 1980s, gave warning signals ahead for about 40 years before it finally occurred.”he noted.
The Senior Seismologist asked residents of the earthquake-prone areas to be alert.
He, however, expressed worry over the fact that the GSA currently has only one Seismology station located near the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) in Accra.
He noted that there is the need for more of such stations across the national capital to detect such disasters beforehand.
