The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that a rerun of parliamentary elections will be conducted in 19 selected polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency.
This decision, made in consultation with representatives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), comes as part of efforts to resolve the dispute surrounding the constituency’s parliamentary results.
At a meeting held on Tuesday, July 1, 2025 — a follow-up to an earlier engagement on June 12 — the EC sought to assess any new developments from both parties. However, both the NPP and the NDC maintained their earlier positions.
The NDC has insisted on a rerun in all 37 polling stations where scanned pink sheets — provided by the NPP — were used in the collation process. The party expressed concerns about the legitimacy of the results, arguing that physical pink sheets were destroyed during a chaotic incident at the Collation Centre following the December 7, 2024, General Election.
On the other hand, the NPP contended that only results from three outstanding polling stations remain uncollated. They emphasized that the scanned pink sheets in question were already verified by NDC agents at the time, and a winner should therefore be declared based on those figures.
The crux of the matter, according to the EC, revolves around the scanned nature of 37 pink sheets. While the Commission confirmed that all 37 documents had been approved by both parties’ agents, further verification revealed that only 18 had been confirmed by the Presiding Officers of those stations.
“In light of this, and after thorough deliberation, the Commission has decided to rerun the election in the 19 polling stations where scanned results were not verified by Presiding Officers,” stated Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman of Operations at the EC.
The rerun is scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025, with the Ghana Police Service expected to provide adequate security to ensure a peaceful and orderly process.
This rerun could prove pivotal in determining the final outcome of the parliamentary seat in Ablekuma North, one of the most keenly contested constituencies in the 2024 General Election.
