EC to provide face masks at polling station in rural areas

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mrs Jean Mensa has stated that the Commission will provide face masks to persons who visit polling stations without masks in rural areas.

The development is in response to concerns relating to disenfranchising citizens who visit polling stations without masks.

By providing the masks, such persons will be able to vote without being restricted.

Addressing the media at the ‘Let the Citizens know’ series, Mrs Mensa said, “The Commission will provide masks in polling stations in rural communities to ensure that voters who visit our polling stations without masks are provided masks to enable them exercise their franchise.”

She insisted that this facility is restricted to polling stations in Rural Communities only.

Mrs Mensa said the Commission has put in place stringent safety protocols and procured the necessary items to ensure the safety and security of all stakeholders at all centres.

“We were able to test our safety protocols during the 38-day registration exercise.
This will be replicated on election day. Interestingly, we saw a rapid decline in the COVID-19 cases during and after the registration exercise, I express hope that the numbers will decline again after the elections,” she said.
