A leading member of the “The People’s Forum, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has attributed the announced reduction in electricity tariffs to sustained, data-driven advocacy mounted on behalf of the public.
His comment comes after the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) announced a reduction in electricity and water tariffs effective from April 1, 2026, following its quarterly tariff review.
In a statement issued on Friday, March 13, the Commission stated that the review was conducted in line with its mandate to adjust tariffs every quarter to reflect changes in key economic and operational factors affecting utility service providers.
Under the new adjustments, electricity tariffs will decrease by an average of 4.81 per cent, while water tariffs will be reduced by 3.06 per cent.
In a facebook post, Mr. Dennis Miracles Aboagye’s facebook attributed the reduction to the mounting of pressure from The People’s Forum, which he said relied on facts and data to challenge issues surrounding electricity pricing.
He noted that the development has helped lay to rest what he described as a long-standing propaganda suggesting that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had imposed a conditionality requiring Ghana to increase electricity tariffs every quarter.
He explained that the advocacy has proven that such claims were false and misleading.
He further stated that the intervention by The People’s Forum has also helped clarify the actual variables that influence the quarterly electricity tariff adjustments.
According to him, the key factors considered in determining the adjustments include inflation, exchange rate movements, the energy generation mix, and the cost of fuel.
With these facts now established, Mr. Aboagye said The People’s Forum will soon officially present its position on the current tariff reduction and outline its views on the way forward.
He emphasized that amplifying the concerns and voices of ordinary citizens remains central to the group’s mission.
