Joyce Zempare, a member of the NPP communication team and former NPP Women Organizer for the Greater Accra Region, stated that the government must involve chiefs and landowners in the fight against galamsay.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has set up a five-member ad hoc ministerial committee to engage stakeholders to assess the government’s efforts to deal with illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey.
On Friday, September 13, Information Minister Fatimatu Abubakar announced Albert Kan-Dapaah, the National Security Minister, as the committee’s chairman, with assistance from four other ministers.
The National Security Minister, Hon. Albert Kan-Dapaah, leads the five-member committee along with the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor, the Minister for Defense, Hon. Dominic Nitiwul, the Minister for Employment, Labour Relations, and Pensions, Hon. Ignatius Baffour Awuah, and the Minister for Information, Fatimatu Abubakar.
Speaking on Atinka TV’s ”Oman mu nsɛm show,” hosted by Nana Owoahene Acheampong, Madam Zimpare said chiefs and landowners should be involved in the fight.
Galamsay has had significant ecological consequences, including deforestation, habitat destruction, water pollution, and soil degradation, which have adversely affected Ghana’s natural beauty.
