Galamsey Fight: “Lack of political will main problem” – Former Minerals Commission

Dr. Tony Aubynn, former CEO of Minerals Commission, has attributed Ghana’s failed fight against illegal mining [Galamsey] to lack of political will.

Dr. Tony Aubynn noted that the setbacks government is facing in the fight are as a result of purported involvement of some of its own appointees in the illegal activity.

Speaking on Atinka FM’s morning show ‘AM Drive’ with host Nana Yaw Fianko, the former CEO of Minerals Commission said a more collaborative effort with all stakeholders is needed to deal with the menace.

He noted that the lack of political will stems from the fact that some of the politicians themselves have concessions for illegal mining.

“We need to take strong action against the activities of illegal miners. The lack of political will is the problem. It is so because some of their own people are involved, or have concessions which they have given to people to work on for them.”

“We need a collective approach to solve this issue. Our water bodies and lands are being destroyed by illegal mining. We need to come together devoid of politics and find a lasting solution to the menace,” Dr. Tony Aubynn explained.

Dr. Tony Aubynn noted that it is high time politicians stopped scoring political points with the galamsey menace.
