Galamsey fight: “We’re solidly behind you”- Chiefs assure Akufo-Addo

The National House of Chiefs has assured President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, that they are behind him in his fight against Galamsey.

 The chiefs have asked Akufo-Addo and his administration to apply appropriate measures against all persons involved in illegal mining “Galamsey” in the Ghana.

This statement is in line with the President’s meeting with the Chiefs, Municipal and Metropolitan Chief Executives in Kumasi today Wednesday October 5.

Speaking at the meeting, President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahohoo Yaw Gyebi II, revealed that the negative effect of galamsey on the environment is evident.

According to him, the canker also threatens revenue mobilsation in the country hence their decision to support the government in the fight against galamsey.

The Chiefs commended Akufo-Addo on his relentless war against forest degradation and illegal mining in Ghana.

“Your relentless war against forest degradation and illegal mining in Ghana is of great importance to Ghanaians especially we the chiefs.

“The effects of illegal mining on the environment threaten the survival of water bodies , farmlands, cocoa industry and even encouraging school dropouts, this undermins the revenue mobilsation drive in the country.

“In view of this development [the Chiefs] are solidly behind your administration to apply the appropriate sanctions against persons who are engaged in the practice illegal mining irrespective of their status,” President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahohoo Yaw Gyebi II added.
