Galamsey: Govt forms 5-member Ministerial Committee to engage stakeholders

An adhoc Ministerial committee has been set up to engage all stakeholders to assess government’s efforts in dealing with illegal mining in Ghana, a statement from the Ministry of Information has said.

The statement dated September 13, 2024 and signed by Information Minister, Fatimatu Abubakar noted that the adhoc ministerial committee will engage stakeholders to assess the government’s efforts to deal with illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey.

Illegal mining, Galamsey, has gained notoriety in recent times, with many unions and associations demanding that President Akufo-Addo declare a state of emergency to provide ample time to deal with the menace.

The Five 5-member ministerial committee consists: The National Security Minister, Albert Kan-Dapaah, as the chairman of the committee, Hon. Samuel Abu Jinapor minister for lands and natural resources, Hon. Dominic Nitwul Defense minister, Hon. Ignatius Baffour Awah, Employment labour relations and pensions and Hon Fatimatu Abubakar information minister.
