President of the Ghana Boxing Authority, (GBA), Mr Abraham Kotei Neequaye has hinted to Ghanaians how the GBA suffered under the outgone NPP-Government.
This allegation was raised during a one-on-one interview on the Legend Sports show, Atinka Fm.
Abraham Neequaye mentioned how bad the Ghana Boxing Authority was doing when he was elected as the President.
He also stressed how boxing has brought more glory to the country but could not get enough funding and attention.
Ghana has in the past produced world champions including Azumah Nelson, DK Poison, Ike Bazuka Quartey, Joseph Agbeko, Joshua Clottey and the most recent one being Samuel Takyi who won bronze in Tokyo.
According to the GBA President, their major challenge was the facilities at the Boxing Arena at Bukom.
He also noted that the facilities were given to the private sector to manage, adding that the move has become a headache for the Boxing Authority.
Mr Abraham Kotei Neequaye also cited instances whereby promoters were charged an amount of GHC40,000 to pay before they organized a match at the Bukom Arena.
“I paid GHC15,000 a week to host boxing league,” he added.
In connection with the non-performance of some Ghanaian boxers at the Olympic games, Abraham Neequaye said the Boxing Authority were given a place for camping but the place was later given to nurses to lay their heads.
Despite the challenges, Abraham Neequaye assured Ghanaians and boxers that as a new government has been voted into power, he is going to work hand in hand to make sure all lapses in the Ghana Boxing Authority has been filled.
He also quoted President John Mahama’s pledge to help all lesser-known sports including boxing, urging Ghanaians to have hope that boxing will bounce back again.
