Ghanaians urged to remain peaceful ahead of December polls

The need for peace ahead of the December 7 election ran through the speeches of stakeholders at this year’s International Day of Peace organized by the Eastern Regional Secretariat of the National Peace Council in Koforidua, in the Eastern Region.

Participants learned about the electoral process and the importance of promoting peace in their various communities at the event with the theme “Cultivating a Culture of Peace through Music and Arts in Promoting Peaceful Elections.”

International Day of Peace is a global observance dedicated to promoting peace among all nations. Peace is not merely the absence of conflict; it is the presence of justice, equity, and mutual respect.

It is a mindset that commits to resolving differences through dialogue and understanding. Addressing this year’s event, the Eastern Regional Chairman of the National Peace Council, Prof. Mark Boadu, highlighted the importance of peace to the individual and the country as a whole. He noted that peace plays a crucial role in national development and urged Ghanaians to help protect the peace the country is currently enjoying.

The Eastern Regional President of the Ghana Journalists Association, GJA, Mr. Maxwell Kudekor, shared the major responsibility of the media in democracy and assured the general public of the contribution of the media to ensure a peaceful election.

He cautioned the media against misinformation and disinformation ahead of the general elections.

The Deputy Director of Administration at the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council, Madam Rachel Adjoa Amofa, read a speech on behalf of the Eastern Regional Minister,
Mr. Seth Kwame Acheampong, who described peace as a cornerstone of any successful election. He stressed the importance of all stakeholders, including civil society, the media, and the voting public, committing to a nonviolent process this year.

Representatives from various political parties, security services, civil society organizations, CSOs, the Electoral Commission, the National Commission for Civic Education, the NCCE, and Clergy, among others, shared a message promising their contribution to a peaceful election this year.
