Former President of the Republic of Ghana, John Agyekum Kufour, has lauded the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) for acquitting itself creditably well throughout its 70 years of existence.
According to the Gentle Giant, the GJA has contributed positively to the development of the country over the past years.
Former President John Agyekum Kufour made the statement while addressing members of the press as main speaker at the Launch of the 70th anniversary of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) at Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City in Accra.
He added that the GJA has in the process produced seasoned journalists in the country whose works are acknowledged worldwide.
The Anniversary, which was held on the theme: “Democracy, Freedom and Independence of the Media in Ghana: 70 years of GJA’s contribution was well attended by high profile journalists in Ghana and other dignitaries .
He acknowledged that the media landscape has had direct impact on the affairs of government and for that matter cannot be left to go astray.
” Today as a nation, we should all celebrate that we live under democracy…just last week the President of the Republic signed the Right to Information into law, henceforth the Ghanaian Journalists has another tool to work effectively to bring light on public activities that enhance transparency and accountability in Ghana,” he said.
He charged the GJA and its members to acknowledge that such a mechanism has never existed and ride on that motive to justify the RTI with an equally enhanced sense of responsibility to the rule of law and the sovereign people of Ghana.
