National President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Prof. Solomon Nunoo, says government is being hesitant in meeting the conditions of service of UTAG.
UTAG) has announced that its members announced a strike action effective today, Monday, January 10 2022 after embarking on a similar strike in August, 2021, which lasted for weeks.
The strike is to protest the worsening conditions of service of the association and the lack of trust that has characterized their engagements with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commision (FWSC).
Speaking to host of Atinka FM’s “AM Drive” Kaakyire Ofori Ayim, the National President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Prof. Solomon Nunoo, noted that after the first strike, UTAG negotiated the research component of the Book and Research Allowance, market premium, and non-basic allowance.
He added that for months, their concerns were not addressed as per the agreed timelines in previous negotiations.
According to the National UTAG President, the association has since asked government to restore the conditions of service agreed upon in 2012 which they said is far better than what pertains currently.

“UTAG members have decried the pittance agreed to be paid as annual research allowance and would want to have government reconsider the payment of a more realistic research allowance as this is critical to our research output, promotion and ultimately national development.
Prof Nunoo has also reiterated the decision of UTAG to follow through with the decision to withdraw teaching and related activities until further notice.
UTAG has since called on government to as a matter of urgency, restore members to the 2013 Interim Market Premium (IMP) of 114% of Basic Salary in the interim and have also urged the government to formulate guidelines to implement the appropriate recommendations to address the conditions of service of the members of UTAG.
