The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has commissioned 15 brand-new heavy-duty trucks at the Tema Port as part of efforts to enhance cargo handling and operational efficiency.
The newly acquired SINOTRUK HOWO trucks, fitted with 60-ton flatbed trailers, include 3 units with 400 horsepower and 12 with 430 horsepower ratings. These vehicles are expected to significantly improve internal haulage and container movement within the port, contributing to quicker turnaround times and more efficient trade facilitation.

At a brief ceremony attended by officials from GPHA, Ecobank Ghana, and Zonda Tec Ghana Limited, the Director General of GPHA, Brigadier-General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono, underscored the strategic importance of the investment.
“These trucks will enhance our capacity to move cargo efficiently within the port area. It’s a vital step in maintaining Tema Port’s role as a key maritime hub in West Africa,” he stated, while stressing the need for a robust maintenance culture to ensure the fleet’s longevity.

Director of the Tema Port, Mr. Tebon Zuma Esq., added that the trucks come equipped with advanced safety and emissions systems, reflecting GPHA’s commitment to environmental standards and modern port operations.
“This is the first batch of 30 trucks being procured this quarter. The next 15 will arrive within three weeks, and over 100 trucks and a dozen Reach Stackers are expected before the year ends,” Mr. Zuma revealed.

He noted that the new trucks are integral to GPHA’s broader modernization agenda and will directly support container handling, cargo transfer, and internal logistics—key components of port productivity.
Mr. Zuma also praised the efforts of the procurement and engineering teams, as well as Ecobank Ghana, for facilitating the acquisition.
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the move, saying it will ease congestion, improve cargo flow, and enhance Ghana’s competitiveness in regional trade.
The trucks are expected to begin full operations immediately.
