GUTA Strike: We’ll open shops on Monday but…

GUTA

Some traders who have locked their shops as a result of the GUTA strike have stated that they will open their shops by Monday, October 24, 2022.

This was after the Council of State appealed to them to halt the closure of shops.

Traders in Accra have closed their shops to protest the current economic conditions.

This comes after the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) directed all its members to embark on a three-day closure of shops to protest the current economic conditions.

Atinka News’ visit to Abbosey Okai and Okaishie Markets today Wednesday October 19, 2022, confirmed that the traders had started the three-day action.

Some traders who spoke to Atinka News at Abbosey Okai lamented the depreciation of the cedi against the US dollar, adding that it is making it difficult for most traders to stay in business.

GUTA President, Dr Joseph Obeng, who announced the 3-day action at a press conference on Tuesday, said the traders could not longer contain these challenges any longer.

This action by the traders in Accra comes after a similar action by their counterparts in Kumasi.

Speaking on Atinka TV‘s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, the Greater Accra Chairman for the Spare Parts Dealers Association and the Vice President for GUTA, Clement Boateng, said they will open their shops by Monday, but stressed that if the government does not do anything about their concerns or tell them something better, they will resort to their next action.

“We are not doing the strike to punish government, consumers or ourselves, we are making our frustrations known that times are hard. We will open the shops on Monday, but from now till then, if the government does not call us to tell us something better, then we will resort to our plan B which will also be communicated to the public through the media,” he said.

When asked who was losing more, whether government or GUTA, he said although they were losing monies, it was not a problem, adding that they were just fighting for the future generation as the forefathers did.

Meanwhile, he added “We are losing money and it is not a problem. After all, if you do not lose anything, you do not gain anything.”
