HIV/AIDS persons asked to take legal actions when stigmatised

Dr Atuahene

Director General for the Ghana AIDS Commission, Dr Atuahene Kyeremeh, has asked persons living with HIV in Ghana to take legal action against persons who stigmatize them.

Dr Atuahene Kyeremeh called on persons living with HIV to report cases of stigmatization to the Police, the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) for proper redress.

According to the Ghana AIDS Commission Director General, Act 983 of the Ghana AIDS Commission Act, empowers persons affected and are at higher risk of HIV to assert their constitutionally guaranteed rights.

Dr Atuahene Kyeremeh made the statement on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host, Nana Yaw Fianko (Mr. Speaker) on Monday, April 22nd 2024.

According to him, stigmatising persons living with HIV undermines the National HIV programme, prevent them (affected persons) from accessing anti-retroviral drugs and other items made available for them.

He revealed that stigmatization kills hundred percent more than the virus itself.

Dr Atuahene Kyeremeh asked the general public to refute the claim that all persons living with HIV/AIDS got the virus through sex.

“The perception that all persons living with HIV/AIDS got the virus through sex is totally false. Not all of them got the virus through sexual encounters. We should eliminate the stigma associated with HIV. This is why I will advise persons going through stigmatization to report to the Police. Do not accept any form of discrimination,” Dr Atuahene Kyeremeh told Nana Yaw Fianko (Mr Speaker).
