I doubt number of deaths recorded at Apiatse- NDC guru

Akwasi Mensah

A National Communications Team Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Akwasi Mensah says he doubts the number of deaths recorded in the Apiatse Disaster.

According to him, a disaster that has consumed almost a whole community could take lives even more than number of persons stated so far.

On Thursday, January 20th 2022, there was an explosion at Apiate, a town between Bogoso and Bawdie in the Western Region.

According to reports, a mining explosive vehicle moving from Tarkwa to Chirano mines collided with a motorcycle resulting in the explosion.

As a result, more than 10 persons were reported dead while more than 50 sustained injuries.

Several domestic and commercial properties were also destroyed.
It was noted that about 170 families were affected by the disaster.

It was reported earlier by the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah that 17 persons had lost their lives but later, the Police stated that the number of deaths were rather 13.

For the 59 who are injured and are receiving treatment at the hospital, we pray that God heals them,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said the disaster needs immediate response looking at the fact that almost a whole community has been wiped out.

Mr Peter Akwasi Mensah commended some individuals who have supported the victims with items and cash, including the Tobinco Boss, Elder Nana Amo Tobbin I and Businessman, Ibrahim Mahama, saying that such donations make the victims get immediate relief because they became stranded after the disaster.

He said while individuals donate to the victims, the greatest responsibility is on government, urging it (Government) to fulfil its promises to the people of Apiate.

He sent condolences to families who lost their loved ones in the disaster .
