I had the love for football but there was no support – Kofi Kinaata

Ghanaian musician and song writer Martin King Arthur, popularly known as Kofi Kinaata, has disclosed the surprising reason he switched from football to music.

Speaking on The Legend Sports Show with Host Adusei Poku on Atinka FM, Kofi Kinaata, who was a talented footballer in his youth, admitted that due to a lack of support, his football career could not go far.

‘Maybe it is my destiny that I cannot continue playing football,’ he stressed. Kinaata again hinted that he had no choice but to reject football because the society in which he grew up was very common, and besides, most of his family members (male) were into football, but the support was not there.

Kofi Kinaata said his love for football is what motivated him to form two football teams to develop and help talented players in Takoradi.

The Fante Rap God currently owns two football teams, Move FC, a colts club, and Efiekuma FC, a third-division club, all of which are based in Sekondi Takoradi in Ghana’s Western Region.

‘I love football; I used to be a footballer, so I love to help footballers who are struggling. I help boys; sometimes I bring some to Cheetah FC, but I am not doing it full-time. “I’ve handed over the club to a very good friend of mine to manage,” he told Atinka FM.

‘Playing football in Ghana is different from music; if you know how to sing, others will want to push you and play your songs from different media houses, so I began to develop a love for music’.

This accessibility to music, compared to the constraints of football, played a significant role in shaping his music career.

Despite enjoying a decade-long career in music and winning the esteemed songwriter of the year award in the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards on three occasions, Kofi Kinaata has released his latest album or EP, ‘KOFI OO KOFI’.

He is currently out with his new single, ‘Efiekuma Broken Heart’.
