I was not owing any depositor when BoG revoked my license- Hejis CEO

The Chief Executive Officer of Hejis Micro Finance, Henry Opoku-Ware, has stated categorically that his outfit was not owing any depositors at the time the Bank of Ghana revoked his license.

“I had five branches operating in Kumasi and Accra, with the head office situated at Mtaheko in my own building. The two-story building I was operating in as the headquarters was my property, which gave me an advantage. I can say, on authority, that I was not owing any depositor,” he said.

“I gave out about two million loans but have not had the chance to recover my money,” Mr. Opoku-Ware said.

Mr. Opoku-Ware revealed that the Bank of Ghana had once asked his lawyers to stop pursuing his money in court.

As we speak, people owe me around 2 million Ghana cedis, but the receiver does not even know where my office is.

The staunch  NPP member, who unsuccessfully ran for the Bekwai parliamentary seat, claims that people have neglected him and kept his money in their pockets for the past five years.

Speaking on Atinka FM’s Simpieso, hosted by Nana Owoahene Acheampong, Mr. Henry Opoku-Ware explained how helpful he was to the microfinance department of the Bank of Ghana when they were enacting laws to govern their activities.

“One day, they came to my office to let me know that I was doing well; I owed no one, but I needed to stop giving out loans and instead concentrate on recovering the money I had already given out.

“These were their words to me on that faithful day, but to my utter surprise in a courtroom, I saw on social media that Hejis Microfinance’s license had been revoked,”

“Some of my colleagues in the microfinance sector have lost their lives due to this inhumane act against some Ghanaians.” The bank has frozen my money, and I have no one to confide in. I attempted to pursue it in a court of law, but all my efforts have been in vain.

In 2019, the Bank of Ghana revoked the licenses of 192 insolvent microfinance companies.

Additionally, authorities revoked the licenses of another 155 insolvent microfinance companies that had ceased operations.
