Improving child Protection: Amber Alert system launched in Ghana

 In effort in to help improve child protection in Ghana, the Criminal investigation department of Ghana Police Service, through its Missing Persons Unit in partnership with Meta has launched the AMBER Alert system in Ghana on Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger in Ghana, with Messenger now joining as the latest platform to support the programme.

The AMBER Alert system is a critical protection tool designed to enable rapid dissemination of information regarding missing and abducted children to the public through all three platforms

 This expansion will help widen the reach of alerts and get critical information to more people who may be in the search area for a missing child.

Speaking during the launching, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, said the introduction of Amber Alerts into their security and investigation frameworks reflects their commitment to innovation, collaboration, and child protection.

 According to her this technology will help them act faster, reach further, and resolve more cases, ensuring that every missing child has a better chance of being found.”

Kojo Boakye, Meta Platforms Vice President of Public Policy, Africa, Middle East and Türkiye said, this launch in Ghana, is their 5th African country, alongside the expansion of AMBER Alerts to Messenger, reflects our deep commitment to child safety and to building safer communities across Africa and beyond.

He added that every minute counts when a child is missing, and by reaching people across Facebook, Instagram, and now Messenger, they are demonstrating the power of technology and Meta’s commitment to partnering with law enforcement agencies and others to help protect children.
