The Minority Leader in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu is calling for an increase in the number of parliamentarians from 275 to 300.
According to him, he wants the additional twenty-five seats to be reserved solely for women.
He said this during a contribution to a statement on the floor of parliament on women empowerment.
“Mr Speaker maybe today we have 275 seats in Ghana’s parliament, but we could decide to add additional twenty-five more seats by dedicating it solely to women,” he said.
This he said, will reflect the size and strength of the political parties in parliament and help encourage women empowerment in the country.
Early on in the month, a former Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Mrs Nana Oye Lithur, called for appropriate legal and policy frameworks to ensure that all bottlenecks to the empowerment of women in Ghana are removed.
And according to the Minority Leader, if more seats are reserved for women in parliament, it will help strengthen the women empowerment agenda of the country.
