Keeping urine for long can cause kidney diseases- Medical Practitioner

The Chief Executive Director (CEO) of Noble Trust Herbal Clinic, Dr George Donkor says keeping urine for a long time can cause damage to one’s kidney.

He explained that when kept for a long time, urine, which is already a waste product, can climb up to the kidneys which can cause problems.

His education coincides with the escalating expense of dialysis. Social media users were incensed by a notice that went viral from the Renal Department of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, apprising the public of a renal dialysis cost increase from GH¢380 to GH¢765.42.

To most of them, even paying GH¢380 thrice or more a week was not easy for the ordinary Ghanaian, with most crying to the government to do something about the new fee.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie with Bernard Luv, Dr George Donkor admitted that there was a rise in kidney diseases due to lifestyle and or certain habits of the youth.

In order to reduce the number of cases, he educated the public on the disease.

He asserts that urine is an excreta or byproduct that is intended to be eliminated from the body. Certain substances present in urine promote the growth of microbes and waste materials. If you retain urine for an extended period of time, the microbes and waste materials will return to your kidneys, potentially leading to the development of renal diseases.

He continued,”Someone who has a problem with their brain, or stroke, or had an accident on the head can also have a problem with their kidney.”

Dr George Donkor explained that there are nerves in the bladder, explaining that the sympathetic nerves send signals to the brain when the bladder is full so that you can pass the urine.

However, he said if someone has a problem with the brain, it does not allow the coordination between the bladder and the brain to function or communicate well and that the person may not even know when their bladder is full and have to pass urine and the urine can also pile up and run to the kidneys.

Men
The Medical Practitioner also noted that in men, prostate enlargement can also cause kidney diseases.

“There are other conditions like prostate enlargement which can cause kidney disease. When you look at the urinal system, just beneath your bladder, that is where the prostate is. So, when the prostate is enlarged, it does not allow urine to flow easily, so when the urine builds up in the bladder, it can climb up to the kidneys, just like when you put a straw in water and it climbs, it is called capillary action so with the capillary action, the urine goes into the kidney,” he said.

He said Hypertension, Diabetes and also sexuality transmitted diseases and smoking can affect one’s kidneys.

Dr George Donkor also noted that acidic or junk food and fizzy drinks can also cause problems to the kidneys.

Meanwhile, he urged the public to ensure they eat well to avoid putting pressure on their kidneys.

He also encouraged those who are able to sense symptoms to rush to the hospital for urgent care.
