KNUST shut down; curfew imposed

The Ashanti Regional Security Council has  closed down the  Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology after a peaceful demonstration turned violent on Monday.

The decision was taken after a meeting between the Security Council and other stakeholders.

Subsequently,  'a dusk-to-dawn curfew'. Has also been imposed on the school.

The angry students attacked a security post on campus over the arrest of eleven of their colleagues last Friday.

The eleven students were arrested after embarking on a procession, which has been outlawed by the university authorities.

However, the students believe last Friday’s arrest coupled with some recorded incidents indicate that they are being oppressed by the university authorities hence Monday’s demonstration on campus.

In a viral video, students were seen vandalizing motorbikes and other properties at the security post, where their arrested colleagues were allegedly being held.

Security on campus was  beefed up following the violent nature of Monday’s protest. The demonstration has the endorsement of the KNUST’s SRC
