Acting Rent Commissioner Frederick Opoku has urged both tenants and landlords to comply with tax obligations on rental income as part of their civic duty to the state.
Speaking on Bullet TV’s News at 7pm with Micheal Addo, he noted that under the laws of Ghana, rental earnings are subject to taxation and must be duly declared.
“Landlords are required under the laws of the Republic that whatever income you obtain from rent, you are expected to pay tax on it.”
He outlined the applicable rates, stressing that:
- 8% tax is charged on residential rental income
- 15% tax applies to commercial rental income
According to him, fulfilling these obligations is critical to national development and supports government efforts to generate revenue.
“The time has come for all of us to be responsible and disciplined… and ensure we meet our obligations to the Republic.”
Beyond taxation, Mr. Opoku reiterated that the Rent Control Department remains committed to ensuring fairness in resolving disputes between landlords and tenants.
He emphasised that the institution does not take sides but rather applies the law objectively.
“We are there for both landlords and tenants. We look at the issues brought before us and ensure that justice is delivered.”
He also highlighted plans to intensify public education to help citizens better understand rental laws and reduce disputes.
His comments follow calls by President Mahama encouraging tenants to seek redress through the rent courts when faced with challenges, rather than resorting to self-help measures.
