LGBTQI+: We’ll continue to pray for Akufo-Addo to assent to bill- Methodist Church

The Presiding Bishop for Methodist Church Ghana, Most Rev Dr. Paul Kwabena Boafo, says the Church will continue to pray for the President to assent to the controversial Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values, 21 bill also known as the anti-LGBTQI+ bill.

Ghana’s Parliament on Wednesday February 28, 2024 passed the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values, 21 bill also known as the anti-LGBTQI+ bill.

The Bill seeks to unequivocally criminalise LGBTQI+ activities.

The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has since called on the general public to wait for the outcome of the case filed at the Supreme Court by a concerned citizen with regard to the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill.

Commenting on the stance of the Methodist Church on the LGBTQ+ issues at a press conference on Wednesday March, 27, at the Wesley Towers in Accra, Most Rev Dr. Paul Kwabena Boafo mentioned that the Church will continue to pray for the president to assent to the bill.

Most Reverend Dr Paul Kwabena Boafo also indicated plans to meet with President Akufo-Addo to discuss the matter directly.

“It is unanimous that Ghanaians are not in for any LGBTQ and that is it. That is our stance and we still stand by it. Now, we are praying that the President will also give his assent to it and so that it becomes what Ghanaians asked for. And so we will continue to pray just as we have prayed over the years to come to this point and that is how the Methodist people stand up to, we support what Parliament has given to all of us,” the Presiding Bishop for Methodist Church Ghana, Most Rev Dr. Paul Kwabena Boafo added.
