A 38-year-old man, Victor Antwi, is currently on the run after allegedly setting an entire section of the Ahodwo High Tension community in Kumasi ablaze. The incident, which occurred around 8:00 PM on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, has left hundreds homeless and caused extensive property damage.
According to eyewitnesses and affected residents, the act was reportedly triggered by a breakup between Victor and his 25-year-old girlfriend, Gladys Sarfowaah.
Gladys is said to have ended the relationship due to ongoing threats from Victor, who allegedly brandished a firearm on several occasions during their time together.
Residents told Atinka News that Victor took advantage of the evening’s football match between Real Madrid and PSG — a time when many in the area, particularly men, were away watching the game — to carry out the act.
He is believed to have entered Gladys’s apartment undetected and set fire to the building, which quickly spread throughout the densely populated neighborhood.
Emergency services responded to the scene, but the blaze had already engulfed multiple homes, displacing several families. As of Thursday morning, the police say they are actively searching for Victor Antwi, who fled the scene immediately after the incident.
Several victims of the fire have come forward, expressing both heartbreak and frustration over the loss of their homes and possessions.
Authorities are urging anyone with information on Victor Antwi’s whereabouts to contact the nearest police station.
