Mahama won’t cancel nursing trainee allowance -Jehu Appiah

A member of the Opposition National Democratic Congress 2024 Manifesto Committee on Health, Dr. Koma S. Jehu-Appiah, has reiterated John Mahama’s commitment to continue the payment of nursing trainee allowances come 2025.

He advised Ghanaians to disregard the reports from the ruling New Patriotic Party that the National Democratic Congress and Mr. President John Mahama will cancel the nurses’ trainee allowance they introduced in 2017.

Recall that the previous  NDC   government canceled allowances for trainee teachers and nurses who were teaching new students.

Student loans were to replace these allowances, along with the elimination of the quota system.

However, Nana Akufo-Addo’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) restored the policy, a move the former president described as politically expedient.

Speaking in an interview with Nana Yaw Fianko, host of Atinka FM’s AM Drive on Friday, October 18, 2024, Dr. Koma S. Jehu-Appiah said there is no plan by the next NDC government led by John Dramani Mahama to discontinue the payment of the allowances.

He stated that after John Dramani Mahama is elected president in 2025, the allowances would increase.

Regarding the upgrading of certificates awarded to nurses, Dr. Koma S. Jehu-Appiah announced that the new NDC government will upgrade the issuance of certificates and diplomas at various health training schools to a degree certification.
